The owner needed a space to pursue his music and recording hobbies, and the only place to build it was over a new garage to replace one that was too small and in need of extensive repairs. So, out with the old structure and foundation and in with a new, architect-designed garage topped by a second floor that would become a Class A recording studio. For the studio, extensive soundproofing was achieved with thick foam insulation in the walls, ceiling and floor and special sound-absorbing drywall that was installed over acoustical isolation channels that decoupled it from the framing. Those and other soundproofing techniques allowed full-on recording sessions to proceed without disturbing neighbors.
